What This Can Feel Like
You may be functioning well enough that very few people realize how much effort it takes to keep everything moving. Work gets done and other people can still rely on you, yet your mind rarely settles, ordinary decisions feel heavier than they should, and the same reactions keep appearing in relationships even after you have promised yourself you will handle them differently next time.
Many clients arrive with considerable insight and can explain exactly where a pattern came from, but that understanding disappears when the nervous system is activated. In the moment, they still over-accommodate, become intensely self-critical, shut down, or try to control every variable because those responses happen faster than conscious choice.
How These Patterns Develop
The responses that frustrate you now usually developed for a reason. Anticipating other people's needs may have protected an important relationship, staying hyper-alert may have helped you avoid being caught off guard, and emotional distance may have been the safest option in an environment where vulnerability was not handled well.
A strategy can be intelligent in one context and costly in another. Therapy helps you understand the function it once served so that change does not become another attempt to shame yourself into behaving differently.
How We Work
Individual therapy at KDW is relational and trauma-informed, with the specific methods shaped by the person in front of us rather than by a fixed sequence. Depending on what you bring, sessions may include cognitive work, attention to physical and nervous-system responses, or parts-based exploration of the different internal positions that seem to pull you in opposite directions.
We are interested in more than insight. The work needs to reach the moment when the pattern usually takes over, because that is where you need enough awareness and regulation to make a different choice.
What Sessions Are Like
The first session gives us time to understand what has been happening, how it affects your daily life, and what you want to be different. You do not need to present a complete history or arrive with a perfectly articulated goal; the therapist will help organize the conversation and identify the most useful place to begin.
Ongoing sessions often move between current situations and the earlier experiences that give them meaning. Some appointments are reflective and emotionally demanding, while others are practical and focused on what you can try between sessions, with the balance changing as the work develops.
Deciding Whether This Fits
Individual therapy is useful when you are tired of managing the same internal conflict on your own and are willing to look honestly at what maintains it. A free 15-minute consultation allows you to describe what is happening, ask about a clinician's approach, and decide whether a full session makes sense.

That is completely normal. Your therapist is trained to guide the conversation, ask thoughtful questions, and help you uncover what needs attention. You do not need to prepare a script.
We often explore early experiences because they shape current patterns, but only when you feel ready and safe. You stay in control of the pacing and depth of the work.
The therapeutic relationship is the strongest predictor of progress. You should feel respected, heard, and gently challenged. We offer free consultations so you can assess fit before committing.
Most clients begin weekly or bi-weekly to build momentum. As you progress and integrate new skills, sessions can be spaced out.
