A Research Foundation, Not Guesswork
The Gottman Method grew out of longitudinal research on thousands of couples, which identified specific behaviours that predict relationship breakdown, including criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling, and the repair processes that healthy couples use instead. Rather than relying on general communication advice, the approach targets the precise interactions research has shown to matter most.
Couples often arrive already knowing their arguments follow a pattern. The Gottman framework names that pattern in concrete terms and replaces it with skills that have been tested against real relationship outcomes.
The Sound Relationship House
The method is organized around what the Gottmans call the Sound Relationship House: building love maps of each other's inner world, sharing fondness and admiration, turning toward bids for connection, managing conflict rather than eliminating it, and creating shared meaning. Trust and commitment form the walls that hold the structure together.
In practice, this means sessions move between assessment, skills work, and live practice. Couples learn to soften how a complaint is raised, to physiologically self-soothe when flooded, and to repair quickly after a rupture instead of letting resentment accumulate.
How It Is Used at KDW
Gottman-informed work at KDW is integrated with our relational and attachment-based approach. The structure of the method provides clear tools and measurable progress, while attachment work addresses the deeper needs and fears driving the conflict cycle in the first place.
The clinical evidence base
The Gottman Method is built on over 40 years of longitudinal research with more than 3,000 couples, making it one of the most extensively studied approaches to couples therapy. Randomized controlled trials support its effectiveness in improving relationship satisfaction, friendship, and conflict management.
What sessions actually look like
Early sessions include a structured assessment of the relationship's strengths and vulnerabilities. Ongoing sessions are practical and interactive, with specific exercises for conflict management, connection rituals, and repair, practised in the room and between sessions.
Who benefits most
The Gottman Method suits couples dealing with recurring conflict, emotional distance, trust injuries, or communication breakdowns who want a structured, research-backed framework alongside deeper relational work.
